Create a productive space – First thing is first. In order to generate the level of success you are looking for from home you must create a designated work space that is strictly used for your work and nothing else. Setting up a proper office will allow you to get done what needs to be accomplished. Find a quite area where people will not distract you where you can concentrate. Working from home will not work if you try and lay on the couch with your computer while watching TV. It’s important that you treat your home work office as if you were in an actual office building.

Get the support you need – In order to be successful working from home, it’s important that the people who live along with you understand that when you are working there is no interrupting or distracting. Whether it is your roommate, spouse, partner, or children, they should understand that they need to treat your workspace as if it was an office away from home. Keep things that don’t have to do with your work out of your workspace. Once you step into that workspace at home it should feel as if you are in a regular office. Keep those distractions out!

Stay on track – If you were in your old office space, you wouldn’t be able to just come in whenever you want and finish when you were tired, right? Be sure to take the usual breaks. Give yourself an hour for lunch like you would if you were in an office. By doing this, you’ll naturally get used to a regular routine that will allow you to stay on track.

Working from home can only be a challenge if you allow yourself to fall out of the normal work routine. By creating a productive office space, having understanding loved ones, and keeping to a regular working schedule, you might even be more productive than in an actual office. We are taking the office and work with us on vacation more than ever. Grab your smart phone, tablets, laptops, and keep in contact with social media. Gone are the paperback books with their worn pages and bent corners; now we read e-books. The massive retailer Amazon’s core market was books, but is now concentrating on building its rapidly growing Kindle market. Amazon is currently working on a full-featured tablet, on which you can read your downloaded books, magazines, and newspapers, but also check your email and Facebook to your heart’s content. Don’t forget lying on the beach with your Mp3 player in your ear listening to lectures, self-improvement audio books, or music.

Skeptics are worried that taking our world with us when we are supposed to be escaping from it could be dangerous. Just because we are physically removed from the environment of work and career, it is still necessary to be mentally and emotionally removed as well for the small amount of holiday time that is taken. Talk with potential customers before you try to sell to them. Are they the target market you consider them to be? Is the market already to swollen so there is no room for you to squeeze in? Ask questions like, “How often do you buy this product or service?” “Where…?” “How do you feel about your provider?” Find out any reasons that you may want reconfigure your plan before you invest too heavily financially.

There are many benefits to telecommuting or working from home.  This is different from having a home business that you run, in that you don’t need to be concerned with marketing, sales, staff, etc. If you are an employee of a business that has work from home options and provides you with the equipment and software you need, there are still important considerations for both your work and your family/home life so you can avoid the common pitfalls of working at home.

Whether you are sewing, doing data input, making phone calls, or preparing corporate taxes, it is essential that you are able to work without distractions and concentrate on what you are doing. Make sure your family, particularly if you have young children, understand that whatever area you have designated as your work space is unavailable during your working hours. It is essential that everyone in the household understands and respects your goals.  Also, helpful is having a regular schedule of “business” hours so that everyone becomes accustomed to the schedule.

As important as being left alone to work is, it is equally important to stay in touch with the outside world and your colleagues. Many options are available to you quite easily. Communicating online literally opens up the world to you via Internet connection. Working from home is not the same as being at home. Try to avoid volunteering your time or scheduling family appointments during your work hours, or your life will become cluttered and chaotic with no definitive line between work and personal time. Most workers who are also parents of young children have come to realize that an at-home-office does not save money for child care costs.  It is difficult to care for children while fulfilling job obligations. Remember, an at-home based job deserves the same attention and obligation as an in-office position does.

Start Working From Home and Save A Fortune

For a lot of businesses you need an external offices, to showcase products, have many client meetings or have a large number of staff to house. However, I am sure that there are a lot of readers out there who could work from home.

More and more we see that our clients are getting out of expensive rent agreements, rates that are not keeping up with the business operandi of  today, insurance, heating, lighting, parking and not forgetting lunch each day.

We are working with one client later this month to do just that. He has asked us to scan all clients documents into a digital format, and back-up in two of our overseas servers. After speaking to the data protection commissioners, he was told that as long as the scanned images are able to be printed out with all the details clearly, then he no longer needs to keep hard copies.

Just think of it, no more paper, filing cabinets, large printers, printing cartridges, the benefits go on and on.

So the next stage is where to work from in the home. After doing some research myself I have found that there are lots of great office rooms you can buy flat pack from B&Q. Now I am sure there are other providers out there, but I like the design of these rooms.

The other option is to build onto your house, now is the best time to build, due to liquidation sales and builders not being as busy as they used to be and not as expensive.

Are You a Multi-tasker?

If you’re a multi-tasking parent, you might want to consider this.

Are you really hearing what your child is telling you if you are switching back and forth from listening to him and also cooking dinner and checking your email at the same time?

Our brains are not set up to wholly concentrate on more than one thing at a time. Perhaps instead of “multitasking” you are “switchtasking” (Crenshaw, The Myth of Multitasking).

What to do?

Schedule better so that you are not needing to layer tasks, and set your priorities so at any given moment you are truly concentrating on what’s most important.
